Overage Costs – Wiring
From day one, everyone who knows something or nothing about home building told us to budget 10%-15% for overage costs. Our first overage was with the foundation. This couldn’t be helped since the ground material required it (after it was dug out and inspected) and having a sturdy foundation is critical.
With the frame up, we recently incurred a few extra electrical/wire costs (changes) walking through the kitchen. The original budget was for 6 can lights in the kitchen. To add a little extra flavor, we added in 3 pendant lights. Wiring throughout the downstairs and upstairs, for a home network, was thrown in to help future proof the house. Our concern was that a wireless network might have limited range with all the insulation we’re putting in, especially in the bonus room. This way rooms are either hard wired or will have a repeater for boosted signals.
At this point I believe we’re still under 1% in overage costs. Sweet!
