Footers are probably one of the more important first steps of building the home and probably the most boring. They are poured concrete pathways (wider than the foundation) that help to spread the weight of the home from the foundation walls to the surrounding soil. This is something most people will never see, never consider, and pray that the builders got it right without cutting corners. We actually found out that the soil conditions (lots of sand in our dirt) require us to have 24 inch footers instead of the normal 16 inches. Better stable than sorry.
