The Stone Slinger

Mike shows off us a stone slinger.

Taking a Look at the Foundation

There’s just something cool about concrete reinforced with rebar. There’s also something cool about big trucks pumping concrete into the foundation molds. Visited the lot. Foundation is poured. They used a pump truck, rebar, and molds to get it done in about a day.  – Foundation walls are constructed by pouring concrete between sets of form work (the total system of support assemblies for freshly poured concrete, including mold, hardware and necessary bracing.) Once the concrete gains its full strength, the form work is removed.   Foundation wall thickness is determined by a structural engineer who considers the height of the wall and the load it has to bear. (Structural load is the force or combination of forces of gravity, wind, and earth that acts upon the structural system of a home). Wall thickness varies from home to home, and even within a home.

Another fun added bonus of working with Freedom Builder is they gave us flexibility in putting a little ledge on the edge of the foundation to accommodate the difference in settling between the driveway and foundation. Normally the foundation walls are all the same. However, Mike had it set a little different so there is a ledge above where the stone part of the siding would touch the driveway. This is great because with the season change the concrete in the house and driveway expand and contract. If the stones were up against the driveway then they would eventually start to split, crack and fall off. Something to think about down the road!

When we were there we also looked over the basement plans to determine where the rough plumbing, water heater, sump pump, and heater. This was great for planning ahead. We eventually wantto finish the basement so this meeting was helpful to envision that as well.

Quick look at the foundation.
